Great except for smoking problem

August 23rd, 2011

I just tried mine and it also gave me a smoking problem. Every time I took it out of the oven it triggered the smoke alarm.

I alternated between using the Silpat and parchment paper. I must admit that I liked the cookies from the Silpat a little better, but the parchment never triggered the smoke alarm.

I have written to the manufacturer, Demarle, to find out what they know about this. I will let you know all what they say.

Any bakers delight

August 22nd, 2011

Since I received a Silpat as a gift, I havent had to purchase anymore parchment paper for cookie baking. I probably bake more often just knowing I dont have to buy, cut and throw away parchment or grease cookie sheets.

The Silpat fits on top of my standard cookie sheet, and every dough Ive tried bakes well and rolls or lifts off so easily. In addition, I use the Silpat underneath bubbly apple pies in the oven, to catch drippings and prevent them from caramelizing onto the stove.

I also use it for laying out sticky pastry so I dont have to over-flour, and this helps prevent drying the dough, over-handling, and tearing the pastry. I imagine it would probably be great for making sticky candies or rolling other doughs as well. Clean up is accomplished with a simple warm wipe or soapy rinse.

Once dry, I store my Silpat rolled up in drawer with a rubber band around it to keep it from flopping open. If you bake a lot
(especially cookies or small pastries), this is a must. You wont imagine how you got along without it! Just dont use a knife on it. It will get marked up.

A Real Workhorse

August 21st, 2011

I was a little nervous when I bought this skillet, since at the time there were no product reviews on it, but I was desperate, and since I had had good luck with other Cuisinart products, I took the chance. Am I glad I did! We were just beginning a major kitchen remodel, which meant that for at least two months I would have to improvise cooking facilities for 5 adults and a grandchild. This skillet has been a real workhorse for me, and a genuine lifesaver (and budget-saver) during the remodel. Its cost was no more than 2 dinners for my family at a moderate-cost restaurant, and I saved that much the first week by cooking those dinners at home in this skillet instead.

Its large capacity makes it extremely versatile. Ive used it to fry chicken, make one-pan dinners, cook bacon and eggs, frozen blintzes, pot roast, stir-fry meals, you name it. It makes a beautiful risotto, and Ive even used it to cook corn on the cob and boil potatoes. Everything came out exactly as Id hoped, or better. I am especially happy with the Cuisinarts solid, sturdy base that wont let the skillet tip over and endanger the cook (or the curious grandchild). I also love the sturdy nonstick surface, which after two months of frequent use is still like new, in contrast to some nonstick pans Ive had where the coating scratches or wore off so quickly that by the 3rd or 4th use the food had to be chipped out. The temperature control responds very quickly, too. You can certainly buy a cheaper electric skillet, but if you use it frequently, a cheap pan will be trash in a short time and you may not be happy with the way it performs in that short lifetime. This Cuisinart is worth every penny, and I expect to be using mine for a long, long time.

Units may be refurbished

August 20th, 2011

I picked this out as a gift based on all of the positive reviews. The first unit arrived and looked OK at a glance. Upon closer inspection, I found some scratches on the exterior and weird spots in the non-stick surface. When I flipped the unit over, I found all of the model information is imprinted into the metal surface; including a serial number. That serial number had been covered up with a black mark and a second serial number has been printed below in black type. I confirmed with Cuisinart customer service that this indicates that the unit has been refurbished.
My order was for a NEW unit from amazon.com (not a marketplace seller). Amazon customer service quickly created a new order for another unit at no charge to me and provided me with postage to return the refurb unit. I was assured that the replacement unit would be new. A week later, the replacement arrived and it also has 2 serial numbers and even worse defects in the non-stick coating (rough spots). I am now returning for a refund. Buyer beware. Check your serial number!

Try This

I read the review about how long it takes to preheat this grill, well being a full time chef (aa culinary arts) and over 20 years in the industry, I have used many different types of grills, and in most cases when I needed it to heat up quickly we would just place a sheet pan over it and it decreased the startup time significantly. Well I found a aluminum baking pan which fit this grill perfectly, the metal does not come in contact with the plastic base, and it took only 4 minutes to reach the high setting. I used a litte non stick spray and placed 2, 1 inch thick lamb chops on it and it seared them perfectly and quickly, placed the cover (pan) back over them, waited about 3 minutes, turned them over, and grilled another 2 minutes and they were well done. Totoal time grill was on 10 minutes. Now lamb is about the greasiest meat and I did get a little smoke, but that was only when the searing was taking place, and with the cover very little splatter also. I think if they could the would make a cover for this unit, but it would probably not pass U.L. standards? Not sure but if you are using this grill as with other appliances you must keep a close eye on them. I got this item next day with amazon prime total was only 34 bucks. Great deal and product.

Cooks good food, but not smokeless

August 18th, 2011

All considered, I decided to give this Sanyo indoor grill a 5-star rating. Its probably more like 4.5 stars, but Amazon doesnt allow that. Ill explain.

On the plus side, I really like the simplicity of this grill. Its also light-weight, registering a little under seven pounds, which means its easy to move around – no breaking your back! Its also quite easy to clean: just soapy warm water and dry! The grill consists of three pieces: a metal grill, a sheet metal oil drip pan, and a plastic base. The base does feel a little insubstantial, but the whole thing, put together, is quite sturdy. The 200 in^2 cooking surface is good for a family of up to four.

I also loved the price: I never imagined I could have a quality indoor grill for such a low price. (Thanks to Amazon, too?) This is probably what tilted me to the five-star rating. The grill, made in China, is of pretty good build quality, and looks like itll last a long time. The price and value just cant be beat.

Above all, the grill really gives you delicious BBQ food! Ive grilled steaks, pork chops, burgers, franks, chicken breasts, chicken legs, chicken wings, vegetables, and more, and *each and every time* the food came out absolutely delicious. For example, I bought 2 pounds of semi-boneless rib steaks at Shaws for ten bucks. I sprayed the grill with some oil spray, pre-heat the grill to 350 F degrees (which took about 20 minutes), and then grilled the steaks (together with a couple burger patties and some green peppers) for about 15 or 16 minutes to well-done. Then my family enjoyed a delicious steak meal. Not counting the cost of the grill itself, but including electricity (the grill is rated at 1300W), the whole meal came to less than $15 for four full-sized adults! Imagine if we had eaten out at a steakhouse; the last time I went to a steakhouse in Manhattan, I had to shell out over $80 per person, with no appetitizer ordered and only tap water! In fact, I found my own grilled steaks (served with Diet Coke bought on sale) even better. Even if the Sanyo had gone meet its makers after this one meal, Id have more than broken even on the meal, compared to any restaurant that serves steaks.

So Im really thrilled about the value and the quality of the food.

Now, why not a full-hearted five stars? Well, because this is a low-cost product, there are a couple items that I dislike. One, the thermostat is a joke; it has temperature ranges like 200-250 and 300-425 but doesnt give you exact markers, so you have to guess where to turn the knob to in order to preheat to 325. Not a big deal after a few tries, and I seem to get it right (more or less) each time even though Id never operated a grill, indoor or outdoor, before. Two, cooking time is not short, period. Preheating to 300 takes about 15 minutes and to 425 takes over 20 minutes. Cooking itself takes between 10 and 20 minutes depending on what you cook and the meats thickness. Also, the cooking time seems to vary with room temperature.

Three, more important, this grill is not completely smokeless. The oil spray will give out the most smoke, although it hasnt set off our smoke alarm yet. (I keep the doors and kitchen windows open when cooking.) In fact, I dont think any open grill can give you smokeless cooking. As long as you have oil heated to over 300 degrees, you will get smoke. Please keep this in mind if you live in a meticulously maintained house and cannot stand any grill smoke.

But all in all, I love this grill. Id gladly buy another one any time. While grilled meat may not be healthy, this grill cooks yummy BBQ meat and veggies and saves me tons of money. I recommend this grill.

High Quality Product / Seller

August 17th, 2011

I bought these pjs for my wife as a present. They appear to be very high quality and the seller did a first rate job. They even included a white gift box. Great service! I am sure my wife will love the pajamas.

Run very small

August 16th, 2011

I bought two pairs of these PJs – a small and a large – for my 13- and 15-year old daughters. My younger girl usually wears a junior small, and the small was skin tight on her, no way she could be comfortable it. but the size large fit her fine. Unfortunately, this left my older girl with nothing – I am returning the small pair. These PJs are cute, but just sized waaay too small.

Nice improvement over the original

August 15th, 2011

I replaced my older model Sonicare with this one (after about 2 years of use, the battery could barely get me through a full brushing session). The Essence 5300s angled neck and smaller head make it easier to reach those tight spots near the back molars. One feature Ive never liked with the Sonicare, however, is the 2-minute automatic shutoff. I typically need 3 or 4 minutes to get the job done. Overall, the Sonicare has really helped my hygiene, and my dental charts are proof of that.

One big problem

August 14th, 2011

I recently bought 2 Sonicare Essences, one after the other. In both of them the switch broke. The first one worked intermitantly after about a month; eventually it quit totally. I really liked the way it cleaned my teeth so I replaced it with another. Within a month number two wouldnt turn off! Fool me twice, shame on me! I now own an Oral-B electric toothbrush; same clean teeth but with a switch that actually works.
